The article offers a comparative approach to the analysis of figurative meanings of birds’ denominations in Russian and Spanish languages; the pragmatics of their figurative usage in everyday conversational speech is examined. Ornithonims develop basically anthropocentric figurative meanings aimed at the characteristics of human physiognomy, occupation and behavior. Figurativeness of birds’ denominations embodies the uniqueness of national character and mentality. Although the secondary semantics manifests numerous similarities in two linguocultures, even the general and universal hold connotative shades of meaning and nuances.
