M. Alpatov in the context of searches and discoveries of the XX-XXI centuries. It is emphasized that the scientist has created innovative, conceptually and methodologically fundamental works that make a significant contribution to the encyclopedia of linguistics. They master controversial, insufficiently studied problems of comparativistics, Japanese linguistics, theoretical and applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, historiography of linguistics. The purpose of the work is to demonstrate the continuity and development of the scientific schools of Russian linguistics and their discoveries in the XX-XXI centuries, using the example of the scientist's achievements in various branches of linguistics. The relevance of the article lies in the need for a critical assessment and generalization of linguistic experience from the perspective of modern multidisciplinary approaches to the analysis of linguistic phenomena and extralinguistic processes. It is said that V. M. Alpatov made a great contribution to the formation of the modern image of science. He expanded the field of linguistic research from the comparative typology of oriental languages to the study of contemporary sociolinguistic processes. The ideas of the scientist in the field of theoretical linguistics and linguistic prognostics are discussed. Special attention is paid to V. M. Alpatov’s discoveries in the history of linguistics – the facts of the publication and introduction into scientific circulation of valuable sources related to the period of Marrism, the resurrection of forgotten names of Orientalists, Slavists, comparativists. It is argued that the research published by the scientist has significantly enriched the tools of linguistics with new approaches and solutions. In conclusion, the article summarizes the results and talks about the extraordinary linguistic personality of V. M.
