THE PROBLEM OF THE ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT OF VERBS OF THE LEXICO-SEMANTIC GROUP «GIVING LIGHT»

The article provides a brief overview of approaches to the study of the verb. The main emphasis is placed on the etymological analysis. The specific view of light, a physical phenomenon in the language, is shown through studies of the origin and development of verbs of the lexical-semantic group “GIVING LIGHT”. The study was conducted on the material of the Russian and English languages. The analysis showed that the development of the semantics of the verbs was based on visual impressions and peculiarities of visual perception. Historically, the meaning of constant radiation is fixed in the semantics of the verbs. The etymological analysis also revealed the main semantic characteristics of light, which indicate the anthropocentric nature of the meaning of light. A common feature for two languages is the identification of similar processes in the transformation of lexical meanings, the formation of concepts about the multiple manifestation of a light attribute, the connection with color perception, and so on. Also, the connection of the words in question with the sacred sphere of human existence, with the divine beginning, is found. Some differences are revealed at the level of origin of words and the chronological fixation of certain components of meaning.
