LINGUISTICALLY RELEVANT CHARACTERISTICS OF TERMINOLOGICAL UNITS
The article considers the main complex of linguistically relevant characteristics inherent in terminological units, regardless of thematic area of their functioning. The author investigates linguistic features of terms through a prism of the accompanying extralinguistic factors. The considerable state-of-the-art review of studying of the term nature and its salient characteristics in ontogenesis is provided. The importance of understanding of terminological units from positions of the cognitive science of terminology is highlighted. The article presents the author's understanding of the "term" and "terminological system" concepts. As for the main and most relevant linguistic characteristics of terminological units, the author puts forward the following ones: monosemic feature, system accessory, correlation to a certain special concept, limitation of the usage sphere, conventionality and stylistic neutrality, motivation. The nomination feature, sonority, internationality and the modernity of terminological units are also considered by the author, however, they are not positioned as their salient characteristics.
